Named for the island where it was supposedly first mixed in a private club in the 1870s, this is one of the few drinks that has barely changed in a century and a half. It is the stirred, spirit-forward blueprint that half the cocktails on this list borrow from.

Manhattan questions

How do you make a Manhattan?

Add rye, vermouth and bitters to a mixing glass with ice. Stir for about 20-30 seconds until well chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe or nick-and-nora. Garnish with a brandied cherry. You need 50 ml (1.75 oz) rye whiskey, 20 ml (0.75 oz) sweet vermouth and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

What's in a Manhattan?

Rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters, garnished with brandied cherry.

Is a Manhattan shaken or stirred?

Stirred. It is all spirit, so stirring keeps it silky and clear.

A coupe, with no ice.

How strong is a Manhattan?

About 30% ABV once it is diluted, so it is a strong, spirit-forward drink.
