The story
Phil Ward built this at Death & Co in New York in 2007 to give mezcal its own Old Fashioned rather than treating it as just a whiskey substitute, and it ended up being one of the drinks most responsible for mezcal's rise outside Mexico. The blend of mezcal and tequila keeps the smoke from completely taking over.
