The Old Fashioned is hands down our favourite classic cocktail, and a go-to for any occasion. Our classic has only three ingredients: whiskey, sugar and bitters, and that's the way it should be. Not to say we haven't experimented, but we think the Old Fashioned should stay simple and delicious.
Ours starts with 15ml of demerara syrup. Some will argue an Old Fashioned should be made with raw sugar, but syrup is a sure way to get consistency and speed. Then 3 dashes of Angostura bitters. Now the fun part: 60ml of whiskey. Maker's Mark makes a delicious Old Fashioned, Woodford Reserve gives it a little more oomph, and if you want something smoother and spicier, try Basil Hayden's Dark Rye.
Build the first three ingredients, cheapest first. Cut a fresh orange twist before you add ice, so you get the dilution just right. If your ice is small, stir slowly and taste often. It should taste smooth and balanced, never watery. Pour over a large cube in a chilled rocks glass, express the twist, and enjoy.
The classic calls for whiskey and demerara, but play with other spirits and sweeteners. We love a mezcal Old Fashioned with agave syrup, a gin Old Fashioned with grapefruit bitters, or a rum Old Fashioned with walnut bitters. Whatever your preference, it's a great way to taste a spirit.
