The story

Once mezcal started showing up on back bars everywhere in the 2010s, swapping it straight into the Negroni's equal-parts formula was an obvious move bartenders in different cities made almost simultaneously, with no one person credited the way Phil Ward gets credit for the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. The smoke adds a whole new layer to a drink that already had plenty going on.
